The presidents of NATO and the European Commission have warned of Russia’s dangerous behaviour and promised to respond to a “new normal”.”Leipzig is a new escalation on European Union soil directly attributed to Russia,” said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, a day after Germany condemned Russia for a failed drone attack on Leipzig airport last month.
We must step up, which includes being prepared to respond to Russia’s recklessness more quickly and effectively,” von der Leyen stated. Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the whole alliance, including the United States, was “in full solidarity with Germany”.
Russia has denied German charges that a drone carrying explosives deliberately targeted a Ukrainian cargo plane on August 4. A robot defused the drone at Leipzig/Halle airport, and it is believed that a second drone collided with another cargo plane.
A third drone was reportedly discovered ten days later at the airport, which is a major NATO hub and is frequently used by Ukrainian Antonov transport planes. It wasn’t until Tuesday that the German government announced that police investigations and intelligence findings had revealed Russia was behind the events.
