Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer says there are “serious questions for police” following the publication of bodycam footage showing how cops responded to the murder of adolescent Henry Nowak.
Vickrum Digwa, 23, was sentenced to life in prison on Monday after stabbing Nowak with a 21cm (8in) sword he said he carried as part of his Sikh faith. Bodycam footage shows the 18-year-old Southampton university student being handcuffed and telling police “I can’t breathe” after lying to cops on the site of the stabbing, saying he was the victim of a racist attack.
Sir Keir stated that the subject of “how accusations of racism informed decision-making” must be examined. Speaking to reporters, he described the bodycam clip as “really harrowing” and said he felt sick when watching it. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) stated that an investigation into the police force’s behavior was ongoing.
