Hurricane Isaias caused four deaths and left hundreds of thousands without electricity in the southern United States. Officials recorded two deaths each in Alabama and Florida, including persons killed when trees fell on their homes. As of Saturday afternoon, poweroutage.us reported that at least 600,000 people across multiple states were without power.
Isaias made landfall in Florida late Friday with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (168 km/h) before being downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone. The storm downed trees and damaged homes. Alabama, Florida, and Georgia declared states of emergency before it arrived, with Florida and Alabama issuing mandatory evacuation orders for thousands of residents.
Escambia County, Florida, has recorded two deaths. According to local Sheriff Chip Simmons, a woman was murdered when a tree collapsed on her house.Joey Williams informed NewsNation that his wife had perished during the storm. He said they went outside to photograph the damage, but when they returned inside, a tree fell through the ceiling and trapped them. I was able to squeeze out. “My wife did not make it,” Williams told the newspaper.
Simmons later reported that a man died of carbon monoxide poisoning after running a generator in an improperly ventilated garage. Four more persons from the same house were brought to the hospital.
