In Reaction to Significant Earthquakes, Europe Dispatches Search and Rescue teams to Venezuela

Following Wednesday’s double earthquakes that left at least 1,430 people dead and over 50,000 missing, the European Commission is sending rescue teams and other emergency aid to Venezuela, according to the UN.

Through the EU civil protection mechanism, 520 responders from eight EU member states Czechia, Spain, Italy, France, Luxembourg, Germany, Portugal, and the Netherlandshave mobilized for deployment thus far. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto claims that a second aircraft is ready to take off in order to deliver more firefighters and specialized professionals to the impacted areas.

Antonio Tajani, the foreign minister, declared that the World Food Programme, Caritas, and the Red Cross will get the first five million euros in financial assistance.In the meantime, 85 French search and rescue personnel have arrived in Caracas to assist with search and rescue efforts.

In an X tweet, Spain’s Minister of Defense stated that the Military Emergencies Unit is “working hard to provide the necessary assistance and capabilities in the earthquake’s ground zero in #Venezuela. Further, “The canine units and deployed personnel are working on preliminary reconnaissance and the search for survivors.
