After arriving at Miami International Airport on Sunday, an Amazon cargo plane overshot the runway, resulting in a fatal event that authorities are looking into. The 21 Air aircraft crashed soon before 14:00 (18:00 GMT), killing five people and critically injuring five more. The aircraft, a Boeing 767-300, struck multiple cars on the ground after crossing a road beyond the runway. Whether the victims were on the ground, aboard the aeroplane, or both is yet unknown.
Reporters will be briefed on Monday afternoon by members of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the government body looking into the tragedy. “Devastated by the accident involving one of our aircraft in Miami” is how North Carolina-based charter business 21 Air put it. Amazon and 21 Air both declared their cooperation with the inquiry. At a press conference on Sunday nite, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava stated that at least five persons had died and five more were injured. Rescue personnel arrived on the site “seconds” after the collision, she continued.
