In the occupied West Bank, masked Israeli settlers attacked a group of European diplomats. The attack on Belgium’s consul general and the other envoys was strongly denounced by Belgium, which demanded that Israel punish those responsible.
Along with the Palestinians, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) denounced “the severe act of violence” and announced they were looking into the matter. The prime minister’s office, however, attempted to cast doubt on the events and implied that they were part of a “coordinated campaign to smear Israel.”
Just the day before, settlers attacked another West Bank hamlet, injuring many Palestinians and Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine. Near Ramallah, diplomats from Belgium, France, Poland, and the Catholic Church arrived in the predominantly Christian village of Taybeh.
Following the virtually daily attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinians attempting to pick olives, they went to the scene to evaluate the situation. The camera captured the confrontation between the convoy and the masked settlers. Reports say stones were thrown.
