The BBC was informed by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that a “small bit of economic pain” was necessary to remove the possibility of Iranian nuclear attacks on Western cities.
Bessent stated that the long-term security advantages would outweigh the IMF’s warning that the US-Israel war with Iran may send the world economy into a recession.I wonder how a nuclear weapon striking London would affect the world’s GDP. He stated, “I am saying that I am less concerned about short-term forecasts for long-term security.
Iran maintains that its nuclear program is completely non-military. According to the UK government, there was “no assessment” that Iran was attempting to use missiles to attack Europe.
Bessent told the BBC that he was more worried about the threat Iran poses to international security than the economic damage. Unknowingly taking a risk is the largest danger you can incur. As the Iranians fired at Diego Garcia, we can now be certain that they possess mid-range intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching London, and we are aware of their desire for a nuclear program,” he stated. He continued by saying that the “tail risk” of Iranian nuclear strikes on Western nations has been eliminated by US and Israeli strikes.
