We recently had the privilege of interviewing Christian Hartmann, Managing Director of Langer Medical, an inevitable part of the Brainlab Company. With over 35 years of experience as a medical technology professional, Christian brings a unique blend of passion for innovation and leadership in this field.
Langer Medical is a renowned name in the field of high-quality medical equipment manufacturers. Under Christian’s effective leadership, the brand has transformed neuromonitoring into a sense of lifestyle in the operating room. With a commitment to user-friendliness solutions, the company is emphasizing improving its patient outcomes worldwide.
The Beginning
We started the interview by asking, “Can you walk us through your professional journey and how it led to where you are today?”
Christian Hartmann shared, “My career path has been somewhat unconventional. Though I trained as an electronics engineer, I never worked directly in that field. Early on, I decided to pursue a career in medical technology, which led me to Engström, a Swedish company specializing in respiratory and anesthesia equipment.
Later, I joined GE Healthcare in the service and sales department, a journey shaped significantly by the influence of Jack Welch – a period I deeply value. The 2008-09 financial crisis pushed me to reassess my direction, and a challenging experience involving mass layoffs motivated me to take on greater responsibility. Support from colleagues and employees at GE also encouraged me. Today, after over 15 years as a managing director, my main focus lies in sales and marketing.”
Overcoming Major Challenges
Challenges are a part of every business. To learn how Christian overcame the same, we asked, “Reflecting on your career, what have been some of the most significant challenges you’ve faced, and how did you overcome them?”
“The financial crisis was a pivotal moment. My decision to stay in management when the company was sold, ultimately led to Brainlab AG. Facing that transition required stepping out of my comfort zone and making decisive choices. Some people grow through challenges, while others prefer stability.” He replied.
The Art Of Balance, We asked Christian Hartmann
We further asked, “How do you balance long-term vision with short-term operational needs?”
Christian Hartmann added, “Balancing these requires both an annual plan and a longer, five-year strategic vision. Regular evaluations and adjustments are essential to stay aligned with core goals. With the right planning tools and a dose of common sense, you can effectively navigate both the operational and strategic demands.”
Evolving Expertise: Offerings At Langer Medical
We were intrigued to learn about the services offered by Christian Hartmann’s business and if he is planning to add new services. So, we asked, “Tell us more about your services and if you are planning to add something new in the future.”
“My focus is always on people; it’s an integral part of both Brainlab’s and Langer Medical’s DNA. I’m committed to developing people and to strengthening the organization’s independence.” Christian shared.
