Meta has settled a lawsuit with a US school district that sued the owner of Instagram over costs to deal with a mental health crisis purportedly created by the company’s social media platforms.
The first was to be the Breathitt School District in the US state of Kentucky which had been planning to sue social media corporations to cover such expenditures. The school district settled the same lawsuit last week with three other defendants: TikTok, Snap Inc and Google’s YouTube.”We have settled this case amicably,” a Meta representative told Reuters on Thursday of the accord, which permits it to avoid mounting a defence at current trial, while similar cases remain due for trial in the near future.
The Breathitt County School District case was selected to be a test case for more than a thousand U.S. school districts that have sued social media corporations. The school district accused the businesses of intentionally making their platforms addictive, resulting in consequences ranging from anxiety and sadness to self-harm.
It was seeking $60m (£44.7m) in damages to pay to combat the effects of social media on students, and an abatement programme. The district also wants the corporations to change the allegedly addictive nature of their platforms.
