Wałysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Poland’s deputy prime minister and minister of defense, met with Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s presidential office, in Warsaw on Saturday to discuss Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision to name a military unit “Heroes of the UPA.”
“Poland and Ukraine are partners when it comes to security,” Deputy Prime Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote in a post on X following the meeting. However, we have to be honest with one another about history.
“I outlined Poland’s expectations on the decision to name one of the military units after the UPA at a meeting today with General Kyrylo Budanov, head of President Zelenskyy’s office. The memory of Volhynia’s victims cannot be compromised. He wrote, “There are boundaries that must not be crossed.” Kyiv had not issued a statement on the negotiations at the time this article was published.
We have been progressively reestablishing productive communication for about two years. Exhumations and searches have been unblocked. We have reburied victims in various locations with respect and in accordance with Christian tradition,” the Ukrainian minister continued. Additionally, he emphasized that Ukrainian soldiers “did not have even the slightest anti-Polish intentions” when they decided to rename the unit “Heroes of the UPA.
