Nepal Intensifies Relief and Recovery Efforts Following Catastrophic Floods, According to the United Nations

According to the UN, Nepal is stepping up relief and recovery efforts in the aftermath of a week of catastrophic flash floods along the Nepal-Tibet border, even as rescuers try to reach anyone who may be alive. The UN secretary-general’s spokesman stated that for many, the goal is to give help, recover loved ones, locate missing relatives, and reunite divided children.

According to Nepal’s disaster organization, at least 1,200 people have died, and more than 4,200 are missing. The dead toll in Tibet is 21, with more than 540 people still missing, according to Chinese state media.

Rescue efforts are ongoing for workers believed to be trapped in Nepalese hydropower tunnels, which could number in the hundreds. A large flash flood, said to have been caused by a glacial landslide, raced through a Himalayan valley last Wednesday, destroying settlements.

According to Nepal’s disaster management organization, about 12,000 people have been rescued so far. However, thousands more people, including hundreds of foreign nationals from India, the UK, Australia, the United States, Malaysia, and other countries, remain missing.
