Officials Report that an Incident in Pakistan Killed Nine Police Officers

A local government official informed BBC Urdu that an ambush by gunmen in Pakistan’s southwest Balochistan region had left at least nine police personnel dead and numerous missing.

According to Deputy Commissioner Abdul Quddus Achakzai, the terrorists opened fire on police stationed at the building site of a multibillion rupee dam in the Ziarat district. He said, “A search operation is underway to find missing personnel, and two senior officers are among those killed.”

The attack has not been attributed to any group. As part of a “clearance operation” in Ziarat, security personnel murdered 15 members of the Pakistani Taliban (TPP), according to Balochistan officials.

Along a national highway close to the scene of the event, protests against the assault on police have been occurring. Mohsin Naqvi, Pakistan’s interior minister, called the cops who were slain “the pride of our nation” and denounced the incident.

According to officials, they were protecting the Mangi Dam construction site, which is being built to help Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, overcome its water scarcity. Due to local terrorist groups’ demands for more autonomy from the Pakistani government, the province, which borders Afghanistan and Iran, has seen conflict for decades.
