The government stated on Thursday that Prime Minister Keir Starmer was not aware that officials had overridden the recommendation for Britain’s former ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, who had failed his security screening before accepting the position.
The revelation of the vetting failure has increased pressure on Starmer regarding his appointment of Mandelson, the former British ambassador to the United States who is being investigated by the police for allegedly giving government documents to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This has resulted in fresh calls for the prime minister’s resignation.
Mandelson did not pass his security screening before accepting the position, but the administration claimed Starmer was not aware that the suggestion had been overturned. Until earlier this week, neither the Prime Minister nor any government minister were aware that Peter Mandelson was granted developed vetting against the advice of UK Security Vetting,” a government spokesman said in a statement on Thursday.
Starmer has expressed regret for the appointment while defending his own behavior, accusing Mandelson of fabricating a “litany of deceit” regarding his connections to Epstein and pledging to make public the records pertaining to his appointment.
