The Game of Thrones has Resumed After the Philippines’ Vote

A game of thrones between the two most powerful families in the Philippines resumes as the commotion and colour of a two-month election campaign fade.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and his vice president, Sara Duterte, are fierce rivals and are engaged in a power struggle. However, in the most recent presidential election in 2022, they achieved a resounding win as allies.

However, as their relationship has soured, he accuses her of threatening to kill him, she accuses him of being incompetent, and she claims to have fantasised about beheading him. This midterm election has become a crucial indicator of these two political dynasties’ strength.

Additionally, the Marcos camp did not have good news about the findings. In the Philippines, incumbent presidents often win most of their senate candidates in the midterm elections. At least historically, the influence of presidential patronage has been a significant benefit.

Of the twelve senators who won, only six belong to the Marcos alliance, and Camille Villar is only partially in his camp because she also had Sara Duterte’s support.

Imee Marcos, the president’s sister, is one of four senators who support Duterte. Two of them received more votes than any of the Marcos contenders, placing them in the top three.
