The US House Barely Approves a Spending Bill Supported by Trump

A multi-trillion dollar government spending plan was barely approved by Republicans in the US House of Representatives on Tuesday, giving President Donald Trump a significant boost and advancing his 2025 agenda. For Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, who delayed an earlier vote because it seemed he did not have enough support, the 217-215 vote was considered a crucial early test.

A budget that includes $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, partially financed by expenditure cuts but also possibly increasing the enormous debt load of the US government, was criticised by several Republicans for lacking fiscal restraint. Thomas Massie, a well-known budgetary hawk from Kentucky who advocated for more drastic spending cuts, was that Republican. Not a single Democrat cast a ballot.

To finance President Trump’s objectives, the House budget proposes expenditure cuts of $2 trillion over the next ten years. More than $100 billion will be allocated to the military and immigration enforcement. Additionally, it would prolong tax incentives implemented during his first time in office and are set to expire at the end of the year.To become law, the spending plan must still pass many other requirements. In a process known as reconciliation, the budget will need to be combined with another budget that is being considered by the US Senate.
