As tensions between Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, escalate, Trump halted a slew of penalties against Russia just two days before they were supposed to go into force.
In September, the president signed the measures into law after they were ratified by Congress. In a move that targeted Russia’s economy, the new US sanctions law granted Trump wide powers to impose tariffs of up to 100% on imports from the top five buyers of Russian oil and gas, with China and India being the most affected.
Trump, however, sparked a backlash from US politicians when he signed an executive order on Friday nite justifying the suspension of some as being in the US national interest. The decision by the US to “completely disregard” the sanctions was regretted by Zelensky.
Following last week’s contentious US contract to buy Russian fuel, relations between Washington and Kyiv deteriorated. The Trump administration is allegedly cutting off vital military aid to Ukraine.
Critics of Trump and Zelensky have traded harsh remarks. After Trump characterised Zelensky as “more difficult to deal with” than Putin, Ukraine’s president, Zelensky, said he was pleased to be among “real leaders” during his address at an EU meeting.
