Three news organisations that the president excluded from the White House last week have been ordered by a federal judge to have their access restored right away. The judge declared that the prohibition “likely violated their constitutional due process rights” and ordered the restoration of access for CNN, MS NOW, and Politico for a period of 14 days. On Thursday morning, some of the publications’ correspondents claimed to have been turned away. After their reporters were refused admission last weekend, the three media outlets filed a lawsuit.
In court, the administration defended the action, accusing the media of disseminating misleading information and endangering national security. Early on Thursday morning, it was unclear if all of the outlets’ reporters would be allowed to return to the White House. CNN said that while some of its reporters were let in, others were turned away. A Politico reporter claimed they were turned away, while MS Now reported that another reporter was also barred from entering.
The president’s attorneys may pursue more legal action, and the White House has not yet commented on the decision. CNN, Politico, and MS NOW were “likely to succeed” in proving the White House had not used “adequate due process” while enforcing the ban, according to Judge Timothy Kelly. He also questioned the Trump administration’s claims that national security considerations drove the prohibitions, pointing out that the president had not mentioned this in his initial proclamation.
