Two officials have verified to the BBC that an Indian tourist died when two helicopters collided while trying to land close to Mount Everest’s base camp. At roughly 08:15 local time (02:30 GMT) at Pheriche, around 12 kilometres (7 miles) south of Mount Everest Base Camp, verified video of the collision showed the two aircraft’s chopper blades striking each other as they came into land. Vasanth Kumar Balaramudu was identified by helicopter business Fishtail Air as the victim of the collision.
The helicopter firm reported that the pilot and another passenger were hurt in the crash, which included one of its vehicles. According to a statement from Fishtail Air, the injured passengers and crew members on board were saved and transported to Kathmandu. Bhupendra Thapa, a Solukhumbu district administrator, informed BBC Nepal that the injured passenger was a visitor from New Zealand. According to the company, Air Dynasty operated the other chopper that was involved and had been transporting cargo. It further stated that only one crew member operated it and was unharmed.
Gyanendra Bhul, a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, stated: “It appears the accident happened when two helicopters… attempted to land at the same spot.” The weather appears to be clear and there are no noticeable severe wind impacts in the incident’s video footage. It looks like one helicopter is descending faster than the other.
