To what Extent Should We be Concerned About the Hantavirus?

The hantavirus-affected cruise ship’s passengers are being evacuated and sent to their home nations for isolation and, if required, medical care.
As a precaution, the contacts of some other MV Hondius passengers who departed on earlier flights or connections are currently being tracked.

According to officials, there is still little chance that the infection will spread to the broader population. In order to prevent any possible spread, passengers and crew must now self-isolate for more than a month.

The ship sailed from Argentina a month ago, and three people perished either on board or after traveling. To receive medical attention, four more people were removed from the ship.

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove of the World Health Organization (WHO) emphasized in an update on Thursday that it was not the beginning of a pandemic, stating: “This is not Covid, this is not influenza, it spreads very, very differently.” The Andes form of hantavirus that is causing the outbreak is not as dangerous as diseases like measles, which spread quickly.
