US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner’s visits to Moscow but not Kyiv were deemed “disrespectful” by President Volodymyr Zelensky. The two traveled to the Russian capital in January and late last year as ceasefire negotiations to end the conflict in Ukraine gained momentum.
Witkoff has visited Moscow eight times and has had numerous encounters with Vladimir Putin. However, neither he nor Kushner have ever made a formal trip to Kyiv.In an interview with a Ukrainian publication, Zelensky stated, “It is disrespectful [for them] to come to Moscow and not Kyiv. It’s just disrespectful.”I am aware that our logistics are complicated. We can meet in other nations if they choose not to,” he continued.
Kushner is the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, while Witkoff, a former real estate tycoon, serves as Trump’s special envoy. Zelensky stated earlier in April that the two had intended to travel to Ukraine, but the US-Israel conflict with Iran prevented the trip from happening.
