Russia Stops using Ukraine to Export gas to Europe

Due to the expiration of the transit agreement, Russia’s energy giant Gazprom announced on Wednesday that gas deliveries to Europe through Ukraine had been suspended starting at 8:00 Moscow time (0500 GMT). Ten years of tense ties, which began when Russia seized Crimea in 2014, have come to an end with the closure of Russia’s oldest gas conduit to Europe. Russia continues to export gas through the Black Sea’s TurkStream pipeline. Following the start of the military conflict in Ukraine in 2022, the European Union increased its efforts to find other energy sources to lessen its reliance on Russian energy.

Early on January 1, 2025, the five-year gas transit agreement between Russia and Ukraine ended. Despite the ongoing conflict, Kyiv has consistently stated that it will not renew the arrangement. From January 1, 2025, Gazprom lost the technical and legal capacity to provide gas for transit through Ukrainian territory due to the Ukrainian side’s persistent and unambiguous refusal to renew these agreements,” the company said in a statement posted on the Telegram messaging app. The Russian gas supply for its delivery across Ukrainian territory was stopped at 8:00 Moscow time.
