During a press briefing aboard Air Force One on Thursday, US President Donald Trump gave a preview of the $5 million “gold card” visa for wealthy migrants, which featured his image.
This could be yours for $5 million,” Trump said, showcasing the design and characterising the card as a representation of exclusivity and possibility. The first card was that one. Do you recognise that card? The Gold Card would take the place of the current EB-5 Immigrant Investor Visa Program, which permits foreign investors to receive Green Cards under the condition that they create at least 10 US jobs and invest at least $800,000 in projects in Targeted Employment Areas (TEAs) or $1.8 million elsewhere. Trump criticised the EB-5 system for being antiquated and ineffective.
The New York Post says that last month, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that over 37 million people worldwide can purchase a gold card and that over 1,000 gold cards have been sold.
According to information provided by the Invest In the USA (IIUSA) trade group of program participants, 135,518 EB-5 visas have been granted during the previous 25 years. Putin claimed in February that Russian oligarchs might be eligible, adding that his administration wanted to sell “maybe a million” of the cards.
