Crimea will stay with Russia,” US President Donald Trump stated in a recent interview that was released on Friday. This is just one more instance of the US leader putting pressure on Ukraine to make concessions to halt Russia’s war, which is currently in its fourth year. Trump stated, “Zelenskyy understands that,” referring to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, “and everybody understands that it’s been with (Russia) for a long time.”
Trump’s remarks were recorded by Time magazine on Tuesday but released on Friday. Trump charged earlier this week that Zelenskyy’s refusal to engage in talks with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, was extending the conflict.
Crimea is a strategically located peninsula in southern Ukraine, situated along the Black Sea. Years before the full-scale invasion that started in early 2022, in 2014, under the administration of US President Barack Obama, it was unilaterally taken by Russia. Any peace agreement that does not call for Russia to withdraw from Crimea fully has so far been rejected by Kyiv.
