As Trump Announces 50% Tariffs on Canada, Carney is Considering “all Options

In retribution for what he described as “unequal treatment” of US autos, dairy products, and alcohol, US President Donald Trump has levied a 50% duty on a variety of commodities imported from Canada.

The target list includes both industrial products like cement and common consumer goods like wine and hockey sticks. However, a number of important exports—such as electricity, potash, vital minerals, and fish will be spared.

In an effort to reduce escalating trade tensions between the North American neighbors, Prime Minister Mark Carney said he had spoken with Trump and both leaders decided to “intensify” trade negotiations.

However, he cautioned that “all options” were available for Canada’s response to the new tariff threat. Carney claimed that since the tariff war began more than 18 months ago, Canadians had “stood together” by agreeing to establish trade routes with other nations and purchasing domestically made goods. He told reporters, “We are united, and we will stay united, so the country is stronger, stronger.

Since Trump took office again in January of last year and unleashed a broad global program of tariffs, sometimes to pursue goals unrelated to trade, tensions between the major trading partners have been simmering. Tariffs are levied by businesses that bring in foreign goods and are paid to the government.
