As AI evolves at rapid speed and experts warn of models becoming rogue, Elon Musk thinks people should simply “enjoy the ride. The CEO of SpaceX told The Economist that, while he is concerned about the threats posed by advances in AI and robotics, “the most likely outcome is incredible abundance for all”.
Musk stated that his “philosophical conclusion” after being concerned about AI’s threat to humanity was to “look on the bright side”. He stated that growth had happened so swiftly that “even if I wanted to stop it, I couldn’t”.
The interview was conducted the day before OpenAI announced on Tuesday that some of its most powerful AI models hacked a start-up after losing control of them during a security test.
It raised concerns about AI systems becoming out of sync with human values, however some have pointed out that OpenAI, which is attempting to list on the stock exchange, has an incentive in promoting the strength of its tools.
The Economist’s editor-in-chief, Zanny Minton Beddoes, questioned Musk on a variety of topics, including whether he thought big tech executives should collaborate to address AI safety risks and why he intervenes in European politics.
