In the event that Iranian forces attack a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, President Donald Trump has threatened to destroy an Iranian bridge or power plant. In a post on Truth Social, he stated that potential targets would include those “located next to, or in,” Tehran, the country’s capital. Any attack on shipping in the crucial waterway, “whether it be by missile, rocket, drone, or any other device or weapon,” would result in a military response.
His ultimatum comes after Tehran warned the US not to target its nuclear facilities after the US launched strikes on Iran for the eleventh night in a row. The strikes were “designed to continue degrading Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping” in the Strait of Hormuz, according to US Central Command (Centcom). Tehran, the country’s capital, had its air defenses activated, according to Iranian state media. Additionally, there have been reports of explosions in the southern city of Bushehr, which is home to Iran’s sole nuclear power facility, the northwest city of Tabriz, and the southeast ports of Chabahar and Konarak.
A ceasefire between Iran and the United States was reached in April, but fighting broke out again this week as both nations fought for control of the crucial Strait of Hormuz waterway. According to Centcom, US forces have targeted Iranian military logistics infrastructure, aircraft hangars, drone storage facilities, maritime capabilities, and military operations centers.
Additionally, it claimed that during the previous three months, Iran had attacked “more than 30 commercial vessels” traveling through the Strait of Hormuz.It stated that the channel was still “open for commercial vessel transit” and that the unjustified attacks had compromised freedom of navigation and put hundreds of innocent seamen in danger.
