In light of the Catholic Church’s dire financial situation, the Vatican released a Wednesday fundraising video featuring newly elected Pope Leo and calls on the faithful to support his work.
Vatican news outlets shared the sleek one-minute film online and on social media, and it was screened on enormous screens in St. Peter’s Square to audiences waiting for the pope’s weekly audience.
With a soft piano accompaniment, it opens with video of the white smoke that heralded Leo’s election on May 8, his first remarks as pope, “Peace be with you all,” and pictures of jubilant people.
According to the most recent figures, Peter’s Pence, a papal foundation that supports charitable endeavours and church activities, collected 48.4 million euros ($55.66 million) in donations in 2023. The ad encourages viewers to give to this fund.
Although the United States, the pope’s home country, contributed the most significant portion of the total—just over 28%—expenses much exceeded contributions, with the fund disbursing 103 million euros throughout the year, according to the Vatican.
Your contribution to Peter’s Pence provides practical assistance as the Holy Father assumes his first role as pope. Assist him in sharing the gospel with the globe and helping our needy brothers and sisters,” the video states.
According to two informed individuals who spoke to Reuters, the Vatican has not released a complete financial report since 2022. However, the most recent set of accounts, which were authorised in mid-2024, showed a shortfall of 83 million euros ($94 million).
