Kyiv has cautioned that halting US arms shipments might incite Russia to carry on the conflict in Ukraine, which is currently in its fourth year. The White House announced on Tuesday that it has halted the shipment of some weaponry to Ukraine.
After a Department of Defence assessment of US “military support and assistance to other countries,” the decision was made “to put America’s interests first,” according to White House spokesman Anna Kelly.
Any delay or procrastination in supporting Ukraine’s defence capabilities would only encourage the aggressor to continue war and terror, rather than seek peace,” the Ukrainian foreign ministry said in a statement.
It stressed in particular that Kyiv needs to bolster its air defences since Russia is still bombarding the nation with drones and missiles almost every night. On Wednesday, the foreign ministry invited a U.S. official headquartered in Kyiv to speak.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence, however, cautioned against speculating based on incomplete information and stated that it has not received any formal communication from the US regarding the “suspension or revision” of the arms shipment.
According to a statement from the defence ministry, however, “through consistent and joint pressure on the aggressor” was the way to terminate the conflict.
