As China, Russia, and North Korea, three possible East Asian enemies, increase their military operations in the region, Japan faces its worst security situation since World War II, the defense minister warned Tuesday.
Japan finds itself in the most severe and complex security environment of the post-war era, and the existing order of world peace is being seriously challenged,” military Minister Gen. Nakatani stated in the preface to the ministry’s yearly military white paper. Japan faces “an unprecedented and the greatest strategic challenge” as a result of China’s military actions, the paper stated.
According to Nakatani, Beijing is “intensifying” its activities throughout the region and “rapidly enhancing its military capability in a qualitative and quantitative manner.” Beijing specifically mentioned the Senkaku Islands, a chain in the East China Sea that Tokyo controls but also claims, which Beijing refers to as the Diaoyus.
States continue to compete, and the global balance of power is drastically changing. The white paper states that the interstate competition between the United States and China, in particular, is probably going to get much more intense in the future.
