London/Los Angeles: Ozzy Osbourne, the iconic leader of the 1970s heavy metal band Black Sabbath, who stunned audiences by chewing the head off a bat on stage and subsequently endeared himself to millions as a foul-mouthed but beloved reality TV figure, died on July 22 at the age of 76, according to his family.
Ozzy Osbourne, also known as “The Prince of Darkness” and “The Godfather of Heavy Metal,” died this morning, according to a statement. He was with his family, surrounded by love.
Osbourne began his music career as Black Sabbath’s frontman in the early 1970s, singing powerfully on songs like “Paranoid,” “War Pigs,” and “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.” These, together with his solo efforts, helped him sell more than 100 million albums worldwide. His music is defined by strong guitar riffs and lyrics that explore sadness, violence, and apocalypse.
One of the most memorable incidents occurred in 1982, when he chewed the head off a bat thrown onstage by a fan. Osbourne subsequently said that he mistook the bat for a toy and raced to the hospital for a rabies vaccination after discovering the reality. The event entered rock mythology, prompting Osbourne to offer soft toy bats with removable heads.
