Elon Musk wants to profit from Grok. During a live conversation on X this week, Musk informed marketers that they will be able to pay to show up in the Grok chatbot’s recommendations. Up until now, we’ve just focused on developing Grok the most intelligent and accurate AI available, and I believe we’ve mostly been successful in doing so. According to The Financial Times, Musk stated, “We’ll now focus on how we can afford those pricey GPUs.
The ad campaign follows Musk’s constant criticism of OpenAI for its intention to start a for-profit company, as well as his legal action against the company. It also happens just after Musk’s Grok AI introduced a “spicy mode” that enables users to produce obscenely risqué deepfake videos and pictures of both private people and celebrities.
It also calls into question how accurate the answers are. Allowing businesses to inject themselves into responses might cast doubt on Grok’s responses because AI relies on source material to represent truthful answers. He said that the objective was to “break the curse of Twitter,” where users become accustomed to the service being free for years and object when advertisements or requests for payment are made.
