Brazilian police have charged 70-year-old former president Jair Bolsonaro and his 41-year-old son Eduardo with obstructing the course of justice. They claim that the two attempted to meddle in the elder Bolsonaro’s ongoing prosecution, in which he is charged with orchestrating a coup attempt following his loss in the 2022 presidential race.
According to police, they discovered a document on Jair Bolsonaro’s cell phone that implies he intended to apply for asylum in Argentina in order to avoid facing criminal charges. Additionally, they claim that Eduardo Bolsonaro lobbied the Trump administration on his father’s behalf, which resulted in the imposition of punitive tariffs by the US on Brazilian exports.
The 170-page police report puts more pressure on the former leader just two weeks before the final phase of the coup trial begins.
Jair Bolsonaro denies plotting to defeat Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, his left-wing opponent, in the 2022 election.
He claims he is the victim of a “political witch hunt” and has questioned the impartiality of the procedures against him. In an interview with news agency Reuters last month, he stated that he had “no doubt” that the five justices of the Supreme Court who were supposed to render the decision had already decided to convict him.
