In keeping with previous actions taken by European counterparts discouraged by impending US customs penalties for low-value shipments, German postal services company DHL announced Friday that it will stop shipping ordinary parcels for businesses to the US.
Last month, the administration of US President Donald Trump said that, as of August 29, it will no longer provide foreign shipments under $800 the global “de minimis” exemption, which also permits minimum paperwork.Postal organizations in Belgium, Austria, and Scandinavia said earlier this week that they would stop sending packages to the United States. New procedures mandated by US authorities for mail shipping are the cause of these probably short-term limitations, according to DHL.
The state-run organization justified its action by pointing to the elimination of the “de minimis” exemption as well as uncertainty surrounding future US postal customs clearance.
It stated that “all postal companies worldwide face significant challenges when sending goods to the USA as a result of this tightening.”
The company stated that, like DHL, it would keep sending presents under $100 to the US via regular mail and that its premium service, Post Express International, would not be affected by the stoppage.
