Following demonstrations in Indonesia, ByteDance’s TikTok disabled its live function for the “next few days” in the nation, according to a statement released by the company on Saturday. To maintain TikTok as a safe and peaceful platform, we are implementing extra security measures in response to the growing violence in Indonesian protests. For the next several days, TikTok LIVE will be voluntarily suspended in Indonesia as part of this action, the company announced.
Local media sources state that on Saturday, demonstrators burned down regional parliament buildings in three provinces: Cirebon in West Java, Pekalongan in Central Java, and West Nusa Tenggara. The arson attacks came after demonstrations in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Friday left at least three people dead and five wounded.
The local media site metrotvnews.com reported another death connected to the fire at Makassar’s parliament building; however, this was not confirmed. Two individuals were hurt after jumping out of the building to escape, while other victims were trapped inside, according to Indonesia’s disaster agency. The chaos caused Prabowo Subianto to postpone his scheduled trip to Beijing, according to a video message released by presidential spokeswoman Prasetyo Hadi on Saturday.
