The aftermath of Israel’s strike in Qatar is likely to be a major topic of discussion when US Secretary of State Marco Rubio meets with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem. President Donald Trump criticized the strike last week, which struck top Hamas leaders on the territory of the close US ally and caused international anger.
Obviously, we’re not happy about it,” Rubio had previously stated. It did not sit well with the president. We must now proceed and determine our next course of action. The gathering coincides with a summit of Arab leaders to express solidarity with Qatar. Its prime minister called on the world community to punish Israel and to cease making “double standards” decisions.
In addition to housing a significant US airbase, the Gulf state has been instrumental in mediating diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the conflict in Gaza by acting as a go-between for indirect talks between Israel and Hamas.
During a brief visit to the sacred location in Jerusalem’s Old City on Sunday, Netanyahu told reporters that the US-Israel alliance was as “durable as the stones in the Western Wall.”
As part of a customary guest ritual, Rubio scribbled a letter and inserted it into the wall while they were there, joined by US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee. The men disregarded reporters’ questions about Israel’s strikes in Qatar.
