Amidst the oppressive heatwave that has engulfed the nation, a wildfire tore through the province of Almería in southern Spain, killing at least eleven people. Authorities increased the number of fatalities from six to twelve “after the confirmation of six more deaths in the area of the fire,” according to a statement from the Andalusian regional administration. Spain’s rescue services lowered the figure to 11 a few hours later.
According to a statement from the regional government, some of the dead in Bedar, Almería, were discovered in burned-out cars. Although the identities of the fatalities have not yet been established, officials have hinted that the death toll may rise and that many of the victims may be international visitors. Antonio Sanz, the minister for emergencies in the Andalusia region, stated, “Everything indicates that the deceased are, mostly or entirely, foreign nationals,” while police are still verifying their names.
He claimed that although the identity of the four deceased were still being verified, they were in a car with a right-hand drive that suggested they were British. Others seemed to have perished as they attempted to escape the flames, according to Sanz. As the fire progressed, roads were blocked and locals were evacuated; roughly fifty people were accommodated in a cultural center.
