54 People Have Died as a Result of the Indonesian School Tragedy

Authorities reported that 54 people had died in the collapse of an Indonesian school, while rescuers were still looking for over a dozen people who were reported missing. When the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in East Java collapsed last Monday during construction, hundreds of students, mostly teenage boys, had congregated for prayers.

It is the deadliest tragedy to hit Indonesia this year, according to the country’s disaster mitigation agency. By the end of the day, rescuers should have found all 13 of the fatalities who were buried beneath the debris. Investigators are currently investigating the cause of the collapse. According to some officials, the two-story building collapsed due to an unsteady foundation.

“There haven’t been as many fatalities from any of the disasters in 2025, whether they were natural or not,” Budi Irawan, a deputy of the disaster mitigation department, said at a press briefing.

At least two individuals who were rescued from the wreckage but passed away in the hospital are included in the death toll. Al Khoziny is a pesantren, or traditional Islamic boarding school, in Indonesia. Many pesantrens are run informally, with little oversight or strict control. Whether Al Khoziny had a permit to carry out further work is unknown.
