Ecuador’s energy minister, Ines Manzano, has reported that five people have been arrested in connection with a purported murder attempt on President Daniel Noboa. A group of about 500 people threw rocks at Noboa’s car as he drove in a convoy to Cañar province, where he was supposed to announce a number of infrastructure projects, the minister said on Tuesday.
Signs of bullet damage were later detected on the automobile, according to the minister, but Noboa was not harmed in the incident. Hundreds of people are seen on both sides of the road, shouting and waving their arms as the motorcade approaches, according to a video published by the Ecuadorian government. Rocks are thrown by audience members at the cars, shattering and smashing some of the glass. Passengers are warned to duck by a terrified voice in the background.
After officially submitting a report of an assassination attempt against Noboa, Manzano stated Tuesday that “shooting at the president’s car, throwing stones, damaging state property that’s just criminal,” according to Reuters. “This will not be tolerated.
