At Manhattan’s Rockefeller Center, the three front-runners for mayor of New York metropolis addressed the stage Thursday to argue for control of the nation’s largest metropolis. The race’s early voting is scheduled to start next week, and according to the latest polls, Andrew Cuomo is at 33% and Zohran Mamdani has increased his advantage to 46%. Given the prominence of President Donald Trump and the likelihood that whoever wins will face some pressure from Washington, the race’s outcome might have political ramifications that extend beyond the Empire State.
The national Democratic Party is likely monitoring whether the progressive Mamdani or the establishment, centrist Cuomo, who is running as an independent, will win the largest Democratic bastion in America.
Throughout the evening, Mamdani’s previous remarks on Israel and the Palestinians were brought up multiple times in both moderator questions and criticism from opponents. The candidate has criticized Israel’s military action in Gaza and emphasized his support for Palestinians and statehood.
He was also criticized for refusing to denounce the term “globalise the intifada” when interviewers pressed him on it. Pro-Palestinian activists claim that this slogan is a call for international solidarity with Palestinians, but many Jews claim it is an antisemitic demand for violence.
