Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, declared Pokrovsk’s defense a “priority” after sending elite special troops to the beleaguered town on the eastern front line. Special forces from military intelligence and assault groups were being used as regular infantry to guard supply lines to troops occupying the town in the Donbas region, Ukrainian army sources told the BBC.
The key town west of Donetsk has been the subject of increasing allegations of Russian advances. Claims that their forces were surrounded have been refuted by Ukraine. As part of a peace agreement, Moscow wants Kyiv to give up all of the Donbas, including the areas it does not currently control.
Including the Crimean peninsula, which it annexed in 2014, Russia now controls about 5% of Ukraine. The use of special troops indicates that Kyiv leaders are committed to attempting to hold onto the town, which Russia has been attempting to occupy for over a year.
Kyrylo Budanov, the chief of Ukraine’s military intelligence, was in the area to personally supervise the operation, according to local media. The conquest of Pokrovsk, a vital supply and transportation center, may enable Russian attempts to annex the remainder of the area.
