Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California who rose to prominence in US politics over the course of several decades, has announced her retirement from Congress. Pelosi said in a video message on Thursday that she will not run for reelection to Congress when her tenure expires in January 2027. Pelosi, 85, led her party in the lower house of Congress from 2003 until 2023, making history as the first female Speaker of the House. “We have made history, we have made progress,” Pelosi declared in her statement.
We have always led the way, and now we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our democracy, and fighting for the American ideals we hold dear.” “As we go forward, my message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power,” Pelosi said. Pelosi swiftly advanced up the ranks after being elected to Congress in 1987 at the age of 47 to represent San Francisco.
In 2007, she became the first female speaker of the House after being elected by her party. She held the position of speaker from 2019 until 2023 after Democrats lost control of the lower house in 2011. The US Constitution only specifies one congressional position: Speaker of the House. It comes next in line to the presidency after the vice president. Throughout her lengthy tenure on Capitol Hill, Pelosi was instrumental in either promoting or impeding the agendas of several presidents.
