Marjorie Taylor Greene, who entered Congress as one of Donald Trump’s most fervent supporters, is now set to leave office after a sharp break with the former president. Sworn in just days before the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, Greene initially echoed Trump’s claims that the 2020 election was “stolen,” even as many Republicans distanced themselves from him.
However, over the past few months, Greene has openly criticized Trump on several fronts. She opposed his airstrikes on Iran and his strong support for Israel during the Gaza War, and she questioned the Republican Party’s approach during a government shutdown, siding with Democrats on healthcare subsidies for low-income Americans.
The final and most dramatic rupture came over the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case. Greene condemned Trump’s refusal to push the Justice Department to release files on the late financier fully and appeared with Epstein’s victims and Democrats to call for a House vote on the matter.
Greene’s public break with Trump deepened as she criticized his focus on foreign policy over domestic issues, writing on social media that Americans want leaders who prioritize tangible, everyday concerns, such as economic affordability, rather than foreign wars or bailouts.
