Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, praised the “important steps” taken during peace negotiations with the United States in Geneva, but cautioned that Vladimir Putin’s demand for the official acknowledgment of Russian-occupied territory in eastern Ukraine remained the “main problem.
Officials from both the US and Ukraine announced “progress” and a plan to keep working after meeting in Switzerland on Sunday to discuss ending the conflict with Russia. On the other hand, no information has surfaced regarding how to close the significant gap between Moscow and Kyiv regarding territorial disputes and security assurances for Ukraine. Although no timeframe has been provided, it is currently believed that Zelensky and US President Donald Trump will meet to address the more controversial issues.
One of the main areas of disagreement between Russia and Ukraine is the issue of territorial integrity. Zelensky has stated time and time again that Moscow shouldn’t be rewarded for its aggression with territory it has taken by force since doing so would set a risky precedent. Trump hinted on social media that “something good just may be happening” after the Geneva negotiations concluded, but warned, “Don’t believe it until you see it.
