Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit India this week for a summit aimed at strengthening economic, defense, and energy ties, putting New Delhi’s efforts to balance relations with Moscow and Washington to the test as the conflict in Ukraine continues.
Putin is set to come for a state visit on Thursday and meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. Both governments anticipate assessing bilateral progress, addressing areas of mutual interest, and signing interdepartmental and corporate agreements.
Despite warnings from Washington, India has continued to buy discounted Russian oil, which is helping Moscow pay the Ukraine war. In response, US President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25% duty on Indian goods, bringing the total levies to 50%.
India has defended its imports as necessary to fulfill the growing energy demands of its 1.4 billion people. Putin last visited India in 2021. Modi visited Moscow last year, and the two presidents met briefly in September at a Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in China.
