Former US President Donald Trump will not be able to force Greenland to change ownership, according to Gary Cohn, a former senior adviser to Trump. Speaking to the BBC, Cohn said there is broad political agreement in the United States that Greenland will remain autonomous.
Cohn, who served as director of the White House National Economic Council during Trump’s first term, described the idea of invading Greenland as unrealistic and extreme. He said that Greenland is part of Nato and warned that any military action against an independent territory would cross a serious line.
He suggested that Trump’s recent remarks about Greenland may be part of a negotiation strategy rather than a genuine plan to take control. Cohn noted that Trump has often made bold public demands in the past to gain leverage in talks.
According to Cohn, both Republican and Democratic lawmakers agree that Greenland’s status will not change. However, he said Greenland may be open to expanding the US military presence on the island, especially as security concerns grow in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions.
