Trump Threatens to Impose Taxes on Nations Who do Business with Iran

An executive order released by US President Donald Trump threatens to slap further tariffs on nations that maintain trade with Iran. The decree, which was published on Friday, offers 25% as an example but does not define the percentage that could be applied. Any country that “directly or indirectly purchases, imports, or otherwise acquires any goods or services from Iran” may be subject to the tariff, according to the statement.

While speaking from Air Force One on Friday night, Trump reaffirmed “no nuclear weapons” for Iran without directly commenting on the directive. It followed weeks of warnings from both sides and discussions between top US and Iranian officials in Oman. In a post to Truth Social earlier this year, Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on nations doing business with Iran.

On January 12, he wrote: “Effective right away, any country that conducts business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a tariff of 25% on any and all business carried out with the United States of America.

The practical operation of the tariffs was not explained at the time. According to the White House, this most recent executive order reiterated the “ongoing national emergency with respect to Iran” and stated that the president may amend it if conditions change.
