Tech CEOs Have Taken to Blaming AI for Massive Layoffs Why?

Big Tech businesses have made widespread layoffs a yearly ritual. But the way executives justify their choices has evolved. Buzzwords like “efficiency,” “overhiring,” and “too many layers of management” are out. These days, artificial intelligence (AI) is the source of all explanations.

Giants like Google, Amazon, and Meta, as well as smaller companies like Pinterest and Atlassian, have all announced or warned of intentions to reduce their workforces in recent weeks, citing advancements in artificial intelligence that they claim enable their businesses to accomplish more with fewer employees.

In January, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, stated, “I believe that 2026 is going to be the year that AI starts to dramatically change the way that we work.” His company, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has since fired hundreds of employees, including 700 last week.

According to a spokesperson, Meta is still hiring in “priority areas” despite its intentions to almost treble its AI spending this year. However, a recruiting block is in effect at several sectors of the company, and additional job cuts are anticipated in the coming months, two employees told the BBC.
