The US State Department Reports That Israel and Lebanon Have Decided to Prolong the Ceasefire

After two days of talks in Washington, DC, Israel and Lebanon decided to extend a precarious ceasefire by 45 days, according to the US State Department.Tommy Pigott, a spokesman for the state department, stated, “We hope these talks will advance lasting peace between the two countries, full recognition of each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and establishing genuine security along their shared border.”

Israel and Hezbollah have been exchanging gunfire since US President Donald Trump proclaimed the ceasefire on April 16. Israeli airstrikes have killed 22 people in the south, including eight children, according to Lebanon’s health ministry on Wednesday.

The State Department announced that it would “reconvene the political track of negotiations” in June.Additionally, military officials from both nations will commence a security track at the Pentagon on May 29, Pigott continued.

Since the start of the ceasefire, there have been nearly daily reports of Israel and Hezbollah exchanging gunfire across Lebanon’s southern border. Israel claims to be targeting Hezbollah fighters and facilities as it has increased its air and artillery raids in recent days, especially in southern Lebanon.
