US President Donald Trump vowed to visit India during a bilateral discussion at the G7 summit in France, signaling a warming in relations between the two countries. Trump stated that it would take place “sometime in the future,” and that India and the United States were close to reaching an agreement on a trade deal.
Relations between the two nations deteriorated after Trump declared his plans to slap tariffs on India last year. Last week, the US military killed three Indian sailors, complicating the relationship even further.
The seamen were killed in the Gulf of Oman as a result of a strike by the US Navy on a ship accused of violating an Iranian port blockade. During his conversation with Trump at the G7 conference, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the safety of Indian sailors working in the Strait of Hormuz.
The two also talked about their efforts to establish a trade agreement, which were hampered by a recent US statement that new import levies will be imposed on countries judged to be doing too little to combat forced labour, including India. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Trump described Modi as a “tough negotiator” and promised to visit the country shortly.
