Due to “unacceptable risks” to the country’s security, the Trump administration declared on Tuesday that new humanoid robots manufactured abroad will not be allowed to be imported into the United States.
This move covers advanced robots, such as humanoid and four-legged machines. China, which is competing with the US in the development of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI), produces a large number of them.
Additionally, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) prohibited the import of power inverters, which are used in solar panels and data centers and which it claimed could endanger the US economy.
Beijing has always opposed the US’s “politicizing” of economic disputes and sanctions based on “groundless pretexts,” according to the Chinese embassy in Washington. According to FCC chairman Brendan Carr, the organization is contributing “to secure America’s critical supply chains.”
The products have been added to the FCC’s Covered List, which is a list of products and services that are thought to pose a threat to US national security. The restriction only affects newly manufactured advanced robotic devices and power inverters made in other countries; it does not stop the import or sale of any products that have already been approved by the FCC.
